Millers Creek Firefighter Dies After Becoming Ill At Scene

WILKES COUNTY - A Millers Creek firefighter died after becoming ill while operating a piece of apparatus at an emergency incident Sunday morning.

Firefighter William Gray Parsons, age 58, died after responding to a structure fire as the apparatus operator. Parson began experiencing chest pains, and EMS was called.

Parsons was eventually air-lifted to North Carolina Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem where he eventually died.

Firefighter Parsons had recently joined the North Carolina Forestry Service.

ARRANGEMENTS

We regret to inform you that William “Gray” Parsons passed away on February 1, 2009.  Mr. Parsons was responding in a fire apparatus to a house fire and became ill.  After arriving on the scene, EMS was called to transport Mr. Parsons to Wilkes Regional Medical Center.  He was then transferred to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center via Air Care and regrettably passed away early Sunday morning. 

Arrangements are as follows:  the Wake will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home on Thursday, February 5th at 1800 - 2000 hours.  The funeral will be held at Millers Creek Baptist Church on Friday, February 6th at 1130 hours with graveside service to follow at Stony Hill Baptist Church in Parsonsville, NC. 

Firefighter Parsons has been a member of Millers Creek Volunteer Fire Department for 8 years and was employed by North Carolina Forest Service as an Assistant Equipment Operator.  Our hearts and prayers will be with the Parsons’ family during their time of need.

A Miller’s Creek firefighter fell ill and died over the weekend.

A spokesperson at the Miller’s Creek Fire Department confirmed reports that 58-year-old William Gray Parsons died Sunday morning after responding to an emergency incident as the apparatus operator.

Parsons reportedly became ill after arriving on scene and died several hours later at a nearby medical facility.

No further details have been released as the Miller’s Creek Fire Department was working with the Parsons family on Sunday.
