GREENVILLE - Greenville’s rising population has triggered the need for an increase in emergency medical services and facilities to assure equal response and quality of service to all sections of the city, Fire-Rescue Chief Bill Ale will tell the City Council tonight.

GREENVILLE – Greenville’s rising population has triggered the need for an increase in emergency medical services and facilities to assure equal response and quality of service to all sections of the city, Fire-Rescue Chief Bill Ale will tell the City Council tonight.

A population increase of about 25 percent the last seven years has increased the department’s call load by about 55 percent, Chief Bill Ales said in his notes to the council. Staff and resources also have been increased, and the department now has six strategically located stations. All but one, Station 4 on Staton Road north of the Tar River, have an EMS unit, and Stations 1 and 2 share a second EMS unit.

Annexations and continued growth in the area along Fire Tower Road led Ales to recommend that a seventh station be built there to provide a consistent level of service to all areas of the city. He also said the addition of an EMS unit at Station 4 would benefit the residents of that area, but stopped short of recommending the relocation of an EMS unit to the station, based on budget constraints and the fact that it deploys a paramedic engine. Response times to those two areas are greater than the department’s goals, Ale’s report indicates.

The chief will present other options today for the council to consider in addition to those recommendations, he said.
