AVERY COUNTY, NC – Congratulations to Jeremy Franklin, chairman of the apparatus committee, Mike Ellenburg, Chief and the members of the apparatus committee of the Elk Park Volunteer Fire Department of Avery County, NC, on the recent delivery of their 2016 4 Guys/Spartan pumper/tanker.
It is built on a Metro Star-X MFD chassis with a 450 h.p. Cummins ISL diesel engine. It has an Allison 3000 EVS transmission and a 20,000 front axle and 24,000 rear axle. OnSpot snow chains are included. The cab includes Spartans Advanced Protection System which increases the survivable space in the cab. It has Bostrom seating for four with three SCBA seats with Bostrom SecureAll SCBA brackets. A Kussmaul 1200 battery conditioner with auto eject is installed. It has a 24″ extended front bumper with a trash line discharge. It is dressed out with Alcoa LvL One aluminum wheels with Real Wheels stainless steel wheel
The pump is a Hale 1500 g.p.m. single stage QMax. It has a Hale Anode System. It has standard 6 suctions on both sides and a left side 2 ½ gated suction valve. It has rear 5 X 6 suction controlled by Hale Master Intake Valve that is electrically operated. The piping from the tank to the pump is 4 with a 3 valve and the piping from the pump to the tank is 2 ½. All valves are Akron 8000 heavy duty valves. It has two 1 ¾ speedlays with 2 plumbing. It has a front bumper 1 ½ trash line discharge with 2 plumbing. It has two left side 2 ½ discharges, one right 2 ½ discharge and two rear 2 ½ discharges. The right side features a 3 full flow discharge with a 5 Storz LDH adapter. The deck gun riser is 3 with a TFT Extend-A-Gun and a Task Force Tips Crossfire deck gun. The pumper is equipped with a FoamPro 1600 foam system for three Class A foam lines.
The water tank is a 1000 gallon UPF poly tank. It has a 20 gallon Class A foam cell. It has water level gauges on the pump panel, each side of the body and rear of the unit. It has a 2 ½ Firemans Friend direct tank fill on the rear. It has a 10 stainless steel Newton dump valve controlled from the cab or the rear and includes a stainless steel slide extension.
The body is all 12 gauge 304 grade stainless steel and has 4 Guys famous 30 year warranty. It has eight compartments, three each side and two in the rear. It, also, has three double spare SCBA bottle compartments and one single to carry seven spare bottles. All three ladders, two hard suction hose and two pike poles are stored in compartments in the rear. All of the compartments are well laid out with 3 permanent shelves, 1 adjustable shelve, 2 pull out trays, and 3 poly boards for mounting. Compartments are well lit with LED strip lighting. The body is totally custom designed and built just for Elk Park V. F.D.
There is a FRC Spectra LED brow light on the front of the cab and two FRC Spectra LED scene lights on push up poles at the pump panels. It has six Whelen 900 series Super LED scene lights, two on each side and two on the rear of the body that also come on with reverse. It has a Whelen dual tone electronic siren with two 100 watt speakers in the grill and a Federal Q2B siren recessed in the bumper. The dual air horns are also recessed in the bumper. All of the emergency lighting is Whelen. It is equipped with a Voyager Observation System rear camera.
This is truly a custom built chassis and body. This is Elk Parks 6th 4-Guys fire apparatus. It is an all 4 Guys fire station. The DuPont Imron 6000 paint carries a 10 year warranty. It was sold by Doug Callan, Cove Creek Fire Trucks, Greeneville, TN.
