Fire Destroys 4,800 Square Foot Home

DENVER - On Monday, December 25, 2006 at 12:24:04 Lincoln County, North Carolina communications center transmitted a box alarm for Denver Fire Department with East Lincoln Fire Department for mutual aid in reference to a reported structure fire in an upscale sub-division in Denver.

Apparatus from both agencies were enroute with a rapid reaction time.

Enroute to the call Denver units requested a second alarm with the addition of Pumpkin Center Fire Department for mutual aid as well as Gilead Fire Department from Mecklenburg County with their fire boat.

At 12:32:13 Denver Engine 10 was the first apparatus to arrive on the scene.

The conditions that they encountered was an approximately 4800 square foot 2 story residential dwelling with fire shooting approximately 30’ high out of an approximate 500 square foot hole in the roof on the back side of the structure.

Smoke conditions were extremely heavy around the structure as well with zero visibility noted.

It was at this time that a third alarm was struck and Alexis Fire Department was added to the incident for mutual aid.

The initial attack crews went into the structure with two 1 ¾” hand lines for a coordinated attack.

Fire was encountered on the first floor of the structure around the fireplace/chimney area.

This fire was hit with one of the hoselines. Additionally, fire was visible from the roof overhang area from the back porch and it was hit with a hoseline as well.

The second hoseline located the stairway of the structure and the crew advanced up the stairwell to try to locate the seat of the fire.

It was during this search that there was a loss of water supply experienced due to a limited water line size coming into the development (6” line).

An immediate evacuation signal was sounded for all personnel to exit the structure.

Water supply was re-established after approximately 3-4 minutes.

It was by this time that there was a partial roof collapse on the back side of the structure.

An exterior, defensive attack was put into place at this time.

The flow rate to effectively control a fire of this magnitude in a structure this size is 1600 gallons per minute.

The hydrants in this area are rated at 500 gallons per minute.

During the extinguishment operations of this fire hoselines had to shut down so others could flow in order of priority.

Additional manpower was called into the scene from other fire departments in the region.

The fire was called under control with all forward progression of the fire stopped at 3:30pm.

Mop up operations continued on throughout the afternoon.  Mutual aid units began to demobilize around 4:30pm.

The final Denver Fire Department apparatus cleared the scene at 6:08pm.

Units responding:
Denver, East Lincoln, Pumpkin Center, Gilead (fire boat), Alexis, Boger City, South Fork, Lincoln County and Catawba County FMO and North 321. Coverage provided by Sherrill's Ford.
