Firefighter Struck By Automobile Dies



BLADEN COUNTY - The Bladen County Fire Marshal is reporting today that Tar Heel Firefighter Ronald Phillip Allen, Jr. was struck and killed by a motorist this morning while performing hydrant markings.

According to Fire Marshal Mitchell Byrd, Allen was marking hydrants in the Tar Heel Fire District and was standing at the the front of the fire department vehicle. The rig was struck in the rear by a private vehicle, and Allen was run over by the fire apparatus. The driver in the other car was airlifted from the scene in serious condition.

Incident Description: Lieutenant Allen was marking the locations of fire hydrants with spray paint on the road surface. After stopping at the location of one hydrant, setting vehicle hazard lights on, and exiting to the front of the vehicle to make a mark, the brush-truck apparatus was hit from behind by another vehicle and crashed forward on top of Lieutenant Allen. Allen was pronounced at the scene of the incident.

Funeral Arrangements: Visitation was held Sunday, 9/24/2006, at the Tar Heel Baptist Church. The funeral service was conducted Monday, 9/25/2006, at 4:00 pm at the Tar Heel Fire Department with Dr. Tom Willoughby and the Rev. Michael Oliver officiating. Burial followed at the Tar Heel Baptist Church Cemetery.

The arrangements are as follows:

Visitation on Sunday, September 24 from 1900 to 2100 hours. Tar Heel Baptist Church, 521 Tar Heel Ferry Road.

Memorial Service on Monday, September 25 at 1600 hours. Tar Heel Fire Department on Tar Heel Ferry Road.

Walking Processional of uniformed firefighters following the Memorial Service from Tar Heel Fire Department to Tar Heel Baptist Church (approximately .5 miles).

Grave side services follow processional at Tar Heel Baptist Church.

From Raleigh, take I-40 to I-95 to Highway 87 South. Take 87 South to Tar Heel, turn right onto Tar Heel Ferry Road at traffic light. Fire Department located on left.

From Wilmington, take Highway 74 to Highway 87 North. Take 87 North to Tar Heel, turn right onto Tar Heel Ferry Road at traffic light.  Fire Department located on left.

From Charlotte, take Highway 74 to I-95. Take I-95 North to Highway 20 (St Pauls Exit). Take Highway 20 East to Highway 87, turn right onto Highway 87. Proceed to traffic light, turn left onto Tar Heel Ferry Road. Fire Department located on left.
