Firefighters Rescue Many From Rising Waters
Photos
RALEIGH -
The Capital City experienced the
worst urban flooding in ten years on Wednesday as the remnants of
Tropical Storm Alberto passed through the area. Numerous active
water rescues were reported in Cary and in Raleigh around the
areas of Crabtree Creek.
In Cary, firefighters concentrated their efforts in the Lochmere
community. Apex fire was special called for their rescue boat.
Several companies operated, with as many as fifteen rescues
reported.
In Raleigh, firefighters rescued several guests from the Milner
Inn and another motel on Capital Boulevard (see photos below).
Engine 7, Engine 11, Rescue 7 and Truck 11 operated with the
assistance of Raleigh Police.
Rescues were also reported in the areas of Rose Lane, Poole Road
and Old Wake Forest Road. Around Crabtree Valley Mall, an area of
repeated flooding, merchants were forced to close early to ensure
employees and customers could escape the rising flood waters.
Around 1700, Truck 16, Rescue 14 and Battalion 4 rescued
approximately 13 workers from an office building that was being
threatened by Crabtree Creek (see photos below).
At 1700, Crabtree Creek was at 23.77 feet, the second highest ever
recorded. The highest was 27.69 feet on June 29, 1973. The high
from Hurricane Fran was 23 feet on September 6, 1996. Officials
believed the creek would crest at around 24 feet.
At 2200 hours, units in southern Wake County were responding with
boats and others units for a reported water rescue in the area of
Highway 42 and Mount Pleasant Road.
