JACKSON COUNTY - Firefighters spent more
than three hours battling this house fire in Sylva last Tuesday
morning, October 30th. No occupants were at home; unfortunately,
three dogs and one cat were lost in the fire. Sylva was assisted
by Balsam, Cullowhee and Savannah Fire Departments.

Asheville Fire Battles Huge Furniture Store
Fire; Everybody Goes Home

ASHEVILLE - The Asheville Fire and Rescue Department responded all
of their apparatus (with the exception of one piece), to a large
furniture store fire last night. The fire on Patton Avenue drew
nearly one hundred firefighters with manpower and equipment from
Buncombe County companies covering Asheville firehouses.
Fortunately, the first due Battalion Chief went defensive on
arrival, wrote off the building and protected the exposures. This
time, everyone went home.

Home Explosion

KANNAPOLIS - The Kannapolis Fire Department responded to a reported
explosion at 1856 Independence Square at 5:48 a.m. on November 1st. The
home was unoccupied at the time.The first arriving unit found a single family residence with major
damage but no fire. The residence was unoccupied and it appeared the
electric water heater exploded. Two additional homes and one vehicle
in the vicinity were damaged by the explosion. The water heater was
found 67 feet from the structure with other debris spread out over
300 feet from the residence. The water heater was determined to be
made in the 1950’s and did not have an overpressure valve.
