ORANGE COUNTY - Jennifer Johnson
with District 11 of the Office of the North Carolina Forestry
Service lights a brush pile with a drip torch in northern Orange
County. Members of Orange County volunteer fire departments
participated in the controlled burn as part of a class on
fighting wildland fire taught by Ranger Jacob Pressley. The burn
on Thursday helped to reduce dead limbs and leaves that can fuel
wildfires, especially during the dry season.

FEATURED SHOT
MON NOV 06
SUBMITTED BY FIRE CHIEF TIM RAYBURN, BLACK MOUNTAIN FIRE DEPARTMENT
BLACK MOUNTAIN -
The Black Mountain Fire Department
responded to an interesting fire recently. On October 26, they
were dispatched to a four-story, 120-bed hotel expansion that
was under construction. The fire was contained to the mechanical
roof area. The area had metal decking covered with four inches
of foam insulation and sealed with a rubber roofing.
A worker was sealing the roof using a LP gas burner to heat the
product when the hose on the burner ruptured. The free flowing
gas ignited the entire roof area. Flames were spreading to the
adjacent walls, which were covered with "Densglass" insulation
board by Georgia Pacific. The contractor advised this product
has a one-hour fire rating. As shown in the photo, the product
held up well and prevented what could have been a much larger
fire.
