JOHNSTON COUNTY - Micro, Pine Level
and Kenly Fire responded when a tractor-trailer veered off
Interstate 95, traveled up an embankment and went airborne over
the Pittman Road bridge before crashing into several trees. The
trailer's rear wheel were sheered off by the bridge. The driver
was pinned for approximately an hour. He was hot-loaded onto Tar
Heel One to be taken to UNC Chapel Hill.
Editor's Note: REMEMBER: EMS personnel need to use PPE as
well on MVC calls. Always wear your gear.

GASTONIA -
Beth Troutman, Host of Fox Charlotte's TV
morning show "Fox News Rising", came to Gaston College Wednesday
to film a Fire Prevention Week segment with firefighters from
the Gastonia Fire Department as well as other Gaston County Fire
Departments. She wanted to experience the types of training
firefighters endure first hand. She definitely got to "feel the
heat" as she dressed out in full turn-out gear to battle
different fire situations.

GREENEVERS - On Wednesday
Greenevers, Northeast and Rose Hill fire departments along
with Duplin County EMS Medic 7 were dispatched to 447 Pasture
Branch Road in Rose Hill to a 100 gallon tank leaking an
unknown type gas. The call was dispatched at 0845 and units
arrived five minutes later to find a large gas cloud floating
low on the ground. GFD unit tried to control the leak but were
forced back when some of there members started feeling sick.
All firefighters on scene did have full turnout gear with SCBA
on but the gas was soaking through their gear. Units cleared
the scene and started evacuation of homes with in a mile area.
A second alarm was sent for the Wallace Fire Department Haz-Mat
equipment and a third alarm was called for Chinquapin, Pin
Hook, and Teachey Fire Departments to assist with evacuation
and decontamination of personnel and equipment. The state Haz-Mat
Team (RRT-2) out of Wilmington was called. After two hours of
investigation the crew was unable to find out what kind of gas
was leaking.
The scene was turned over to the State SBI for further
investigation. Over 100 emergency workers were on scene.
Thirty firefighters were checked out by EMS and one was
transported to Duplin General Hospital for evaluation. All
units cleared the call around 1421. A total of 70 people were
evacuated and six local roads were shut down until the scene
was deemed safe.

ROWAN COUNTY - On Sunday
night October 15, at 1955 the Rockwell Rural Fire Department was
dispatched to a structure fire at 11901 Old Beatty Ford Road. It was
quickly determined to be the home of Rockwell Rural Fire Lieutenant
Chris Lambert. He was not a home when the fire started, but quickly
alerted other units that it was his residence while he rushed to the
scene.
Firefighters arrived within minutes to find
the single story residential heavily involved and flames shooting
from the roof. The house and all contents were a total loss. The
fire was quickly controlled in about 20 minutes. No one was injured
in the fire, his pet dog did not survive this fire. Lieutenant
Lambert quickly arrived at the scene and helped crews extinguish the
fire. They were able to salvage a few items, however it was a total
loss.

BUNCOMBE COUNTY - Skyland Fire-Rescue "B" shift members fought an
early morning tour bus fire off Long Shoals Road on Friday, October
20. The bus was en route to an elementary school to pick up a group
when the fire started. The fire started underneath the rear of the
bus above the rear wheels. The were no injuries as the driver was
the only one on the bus. Engine 21-2, Engine 21 and Chief 2
responded.

Management Director Dies

RALEIGH - Former North Carolina
Emergency Management Director Eric Tolbert passed away this week.
Visitation will be from 1800 to 2000 hours, Saturday, October 21 at
Pendry's Funeral Home, 522 Wilkesboro Boulevard, Lenoir. Funeral
services will be held at Mt Hermon United Methodist Church at 1500
hours, Sunday, October 22. The church is located at 2695 Alfred
Hartley Road, Lenoir.

RALEIGH -
Western Wake Fire Rescue is staffing the
State Fair Fire Department this year. An engine, a brush
truck, and two golf carts are stationed at a temporary fire
base located next to the Village of Yesteryear. A tanker is
stationed at the Blue Ridge Road entrance.
Wake County EMS also has personnel and equipment at the Fair.
Two ambulances and a supervisor's unit are stationed at the
Gov. James G. Martin Building. A third ambulance is stationed
near the State Fair Administration Building in the southeast
corner of the Fairgrounds.
