JOHNSTON COUNTY -
A suspicious fire destroyed the home of Pine Level Commissioner Jimmy Garner on Saturday. The Johnston County Fire Marshal’s Office and Pine Level Police are investigating. Around 9:35am, crews from Pine Level, Selma, Brogden and Princeton  were dispatched to Garner’s residence after a passing motorist spotted flames and dialed 911.  Garner and his family were out of town when the fire broke out. However, several of the family’s pets perished in the blaze.  The home is a total loss.  The fire is believed to have started in a rear living room area that had been converted from a carport. Several firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion.

"We had a good working fire in the rear of the structure," said Phillip McDaniel, interim assistant fire chief in Pine Level. "We made a quick attack."
