BALD HEAD ISLAND - A blazing fire
destroyed a home on an isolated street on Bald Head Island
Monday night. Fire Chief Chip Munna said the home had been
burning for some time before anyone noticed the smoke and
flames. Bald Head requested assistance from Oak Island, Yaupon
Beach and Southport fire departments.
A USCG Oak Island based boat carried 15 firefighters from Oak
Island and Yaupon Beach. Southport firefighter arrived by ferry.
The home had a sprinkler system in the basement but did not have
an alarm system.

GASTONIA - The Gastonia Fire
Department removed an injured worker for the top of a business
on Tuesday morning. The 20-year-old man was working on an air
conditioning unit and hyper-extended his lower leg.

APEX - CFP Dispatchers last week
were tracking the escalating incident in Apex from the
beginning. Several photographers safely documented the incident,
mostly at staging areas and evacuation centers. The Raleigh Fire
Department's new Mobile Command Post, with radio identifier
"FIELD COMM 1" was utilized for the first time at the incident,
operating for several days.
Editor's Note: at least one FireNews.net tee-shirt was
spotted operating in the Command Post (see photo above).

EMMITSBURG, MARYLAND - Pictured
are members of the Charlotte Fire Department Honor Guard / Pipes and
Drums which participated in the annual National Fallen Firefighters
Memorial this past weekend in Emmitsburg. This was the last official
year of attendance (12 straight) for Battalion Chief Jimmy Thompson
(pictured preparing to ring the bell) who has led the C.F.D. Honor
Guard since 1976. Chief Thompson will retire from Operations in
December after 31 years of dedicated duty.

Town of Shallotte Fire Department
Seeks Youth Support

SHALLOTTE -
The Town of Shallotte Fire
Department Venturing Program will involve young adult men and women
14 through 18 years of age. The program will team up young men and
women with an interest in firefighting. Participating youth will
have the opportunity to contribute to their community and gain
practical experience to start a career path in the fire service. The
youth will be exposed to activities to provide them a foundation in
social aspects, leadership opportunities, physical fitness, customer
service delivery, various outdoor environments and community
citizenship.They will be given the
opportunity to lead fellow youth through training opportunities and
hands on experience under the guidance of adult leaders. In
addition, the youth will have opportunities to learn and grow
through their experiences with positive and caring reinforce from
the adult leadership.
Enrollment will begin Thursday, October 26th,
2006 from 7:00pm until 10:00pm at the Shallotte Regional Fire
Training Center, 400 Forest Street Extension in Shallotte, North

Two-Alarm Fire at Elderly
High-Rise

DEPARTMENT
DURHAM - First arriving fire units found heavy fire showing from
a 4th floor window of an elderly high-rise building at 807 South
Duke Street. Knock-down of the fire took only 15 minutes. All
searches of the fire floor were negative.
Hundreds of residents on the upper floors were evacuated.
Several residents were transported for smoke inhalation
injuries.
