BOONE -
On September 14, 2006, at 2326, Boone Fire
responded to a reported structure fire at 110 Clyde Townsend Road.
While en-route, Watauga County Dispatch advised there were three
victims trapped inside the apartment, according to law enforcement
officers already at the scene.
Boone Fire arrived and found an apartment
with heavy fire venting to the exterior from the windows and
doorway. Extinguishment and rescue operations started and three
victims were removed from the apartment.
Three additional victims had evacuated with
the help of law enforcement prior to the fire department's
arrival. All six victims were transported to Watauga Medical
Center. The three victims removed from the apartment by Boone Fire
died due to the fire. One additional victim was transferred to
Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for
treatment. The final two additional victims received treatment at
Watauga Medical Center.
The cause of the fire remains under
investigation at this time. The Boone Fire Department and the
Watauga County Fire Marshal's Office are conducting the
investigation. The victims were ages 5, 6 and 8.
Cover Creek and Foscoe Fire Departments
responded to the scene to assist Boone Fire. Blowing Rock Fire
Rescue staffed one of Boone's Stations to provide additional
response as needed during this incident. Engines 4 and 8, Tankers
1 and 2, Squad 1 and four staff vehicles responded to the alarm.

to make sure all North Carolina firefighters are covered in the
unfortunate event of an injury or death, the North Carolina
State Firemen's Association has placed a list of all non-member
departments on their website.
We encourage all firefighters to visit the list. If you find
that your department is listed, encourage your Chief officers
and Board of Directors to address the situation immediately.

DENVER - On Saturday, September 16,
2006 at 1720 the Denver Fire Department along with Lincoln
County EMS was dispatched to the 3300 block of North NC Highway
16 in Denver, in the vicinity of Denver Dr. The call was for a
single vehicle auto crash with a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV)
crashing head on into a tree.
Denver Fire Department Rescue 10 was the first emergency vehicle
on the scene and reported that they had a large SUV head on into
a tree with extremely heavy damage to the front of the vehicle.
Lincoln County EMS arrived on the scene within seconds of Rescue
10. Initial assessment of the scene revealed that there were a
total of 3 victims in the wreck, with 2 sustaining life
threatening injuries.
All 3 victims had to be extricated from the vehicle using
hydraulic rescue tools. Denver firefighters performed the
extrication of the victims. All victims were free from the
vehicle at 1734, 10 minutes after arrival of the Denver Fire
Department Rescue 10. The victims were transported to Carolina’s
Medical Center via Med Center Air and Baptist Air Care.

IREDELL COUNTY - On Friday at 1510, West Iredell Fire and Iredell
Rescue and EMS were dispatched to a multiple vehicle collision on
Interstate 40 near MM 144 involving three tractor-trailers. Catawba
County Station 8 was called in to establish a landing zone. Catawba
Rescue, Troutman Fire and Rescue and Monticello were among the other
agencies assisting. The extrication took approximately one hour.
Traffic on the Interstate was backed up for over two hours.
