INCIDENT REPORT
FRI SEP 15
SUBMITTED BY ROBBIE BOLIN
WILKES COUNTY -
At 0900 on September
7, the Millers Creek Fire Department was dispatched to a working
house fire in the Summit Ridge Community. First arriving
firefighters reported a well involved 2500 square foot home with a
possible entrapment. Millers
Creek Fire Chief Jason Smithey requested mutual aid from two other
Wilkes departments and one Ashe County department for tankers and
manpower.
The home in the secluded mountain
community was two miles from the main Summit Road with most of the
road being one lane of traffic. An engine and tanker responded
from MCFD Station 2 and two pumper tankers from MCFD station 1.
Also involved were tankers and manpower from Champion FD, Cricket
FD and Fleetwood FD from Ashe county. Wilkes EMS and Wilkes Rescue
Squad also responded and provided a paramedic ambulance.
Firefighters made a valiant effort to
save what they could but with limited manpower. It was quickly
relayed by the daughter of the home owner that there was no one at
home at the time of the fire. Tankers were staged at intervals
along the narrow roadway to allow the units to travel in and out
for the water shuttle which took place from MCFD station 2
which was an 8 mile round trip from the fire scene.
Firefighters did manage to save the
contents of one bedroom and protected two exposures which included
a storage building and an SUV. The family was able to salvage
many pieces of memorabilia and other items from the bedroom.
