Hunter was found unwanted at
New Hanover Regional Medical Center ER on July 4th 1993. He was a
cute 8 week old black lab. He was later trained by Kevin Milliken
(Pender Co. K-9 officer) and Kurt Stansburry (Wilmington K-9
officer). Hunter became one of New Hanover’s first certified K-9's
used to find human remains. He was SAR-K9 certified in 1995.
Hunter was used in searches along the beaches after several local
hurricanes, and was used by Carolina Emergency Water Response Team
for searching for missing people long river and lakes. Hunter was
even on the call-list for helping at the Pentagon after 9-11 (all
though he did not go). "Hot" retired from Search and Rescue in 2003,
after being treated for a bad hip.
Hunter has received thank you letters from both New Hanover & Pender
County Sheriffs Departments. One letter stated "Hunter is a great
asset to all Search and Rescuers." Hunter "Hot" Hoottie Wardrip died
