SPECIAL REPORT
Charlotte Fire Alarm Switches to Backup Dispatch System After
Lightning Damages Power Source
FRI AUG 11
UPDATED 0830
SUBMITTED BY CAPT ROB BRISLEY, CHARLOTTE FIRE DEPARTMENT
CHARLOTTE - The Charlotte
Fire Department is using its backup dispatch system – hand-held
radios – to dispatch calls for service after a lightning strike
around 2100 hours Thursday night damaged the uninterrupted power
source (UPS) at Station 1 on North Myers St. While there is little
or no damage to the building and no injuries occurred, the lightning
strike took the department’s Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system
out of service. Some of the department’s Telecommunications staff
has already relocated to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and
Mecklenburg County MEDIC dispatch centers to receive fire-related
911 calls and relay them to the Fire Dispatch Center.
Employees from the City's Information Technology Division (Business
Support Services) are working with the Fire Department personnel to
assess the damage and determine what repairs need to be made. The
City’s Radio Shop, a division of Business Support Services, is also
on site to support the radio dispatch system. Work will continue
overnight and until the system is fully restored. No estimate yet on
when the work will be completed.
People requiring emergency assistance should still call 911. That
phone system remains fully operational. No response delays are
anticipated as a result of the damage to the CAD system.
UPDATE:
About 4 hours into the incident, technicians were able to
return all systems to normal operating status. As of 0100 hours
Friday, CAD systems were back on line.
