With NCFS Killed in I-40 Crash

WAKE COUNTY
- Nemeth Sanders of Bailey, age 43, was killed Friday as he was
returning from pump school in the western part of the state.
Sanders was a Firefighter/Fire Equipment Operator with the North
Carolina Division of Forestry Resources.

Ties Up Friday Traffic For Hours

WAKE COUNTY
- A fiery crash on Interstate 40 near RDU International Airport
involved eight vehicles, killed one and sent others to the hospital
in critical condition. The busy Interstate was closed for hours,
including two lanes into Monday.
The control tower at RDU initially thought a plane had crashed and
dispatched ARFF equipment. Units responding included: Cary E1 R4;
Cary EMS 571 574 580; Durham E13; Morrisville E1 E2 E3; Parkwood
(two tankers); RDU CFR-3; Raleigh E14 R14 E24; Western Wake 295;
Wake EMS Truck 1; Six Forks EMS 1273 1274 1282; EMS 8 4 204; Durham
Highway E4.

Duplin County Firefighting Team Leader Dies

DUPLIN COUNTY - With deep regret, we report on the passing of
Eddie Southerland of the Lyman Fire Department. Eddie received
full firefighter honors at his services held Sunday. Eddie was
the operator of the Duplin County Firefighting Team email list.
He had been battling several illnesses recently and died in the
presence of his family.

Serious Motor Vehicle Collision on U.S.
Highway 1

MOORE COUNTY - This MVC head-on occurred at the intersection of US
Highway 1 and Cranes Creek Road. Units found heavy damage involving
two vehicles on arrival. Two patients were pinned, one was
pronounced dead at the scene. Command called for UNC Air Care for
the other patient, who coded after extrication. All units cleared
the scene after approximately two hours.

Quick Work at House Fire

DAVIE COUNTY - Firefighters from Advance and Smith Grove check for
fire extension at a house fire with a thermal imaging camera early
Sunday morning. Quick response by both departments held damage to
the house to a minimum.
