Half of Selma's Firefighters
Walk Out in Protest
MON JUN 11
SUBMITTED BY CARTER RABIL, CFP-7322
SELMA -
Half of Selma's
firefighting force walked off the job last Thursday after a dispute
with the Town Manager and Mayor about the Fire Chief grew to a head
last week. Twelve firefighters dropped off their turnout gear at the
mayor's house and they were terminated by the Town Manager Friday
morning.
Selma officials notified Johnston Communications to have surrounding
departments respond into the town in case of a fire call.
The debate centers around whether the firefighters are volunteers
and should be allowed to elect their own Chief. The Town Manager
believes they are employees because they receive a stipend, and that
the town should decide who should be Chief. A meeting is schedule
for Wednesday to work towards a solution.
