Fire Units Responding to South Carolina Fire

GREAT FALLS, SOUTH CAROLINA - The Charlotte Fire Department is
responding several pieces of equipment to help exhausted
firefighters battle a huge warehouse blaze that started burning on
Tuesday, June 6. Great Falls is located about 40 miles due south of
Charlotte in Chester County, South Carolina. The building is over
320,000 square feet on a sixteen acre complex.
On Saturday just before noon, CFD Battalion Chief 5, Car 11, Car 17, Engine 20,
Ladder 26, Engine 24 and Rescue 10 and Engine 32 with Haz-Mat 3 were reported en route to
assist. This also marks the first mobilization for Charlotte's new
"Field Comm" unit. On Friday, crews utilized two BlackHawk
helicopters with 750 gallon bambi buckets to help extinguish the
blaze. Several hundred residents remain evacuated.

Asheville Battalion Chief Killed in Automobile Collision

ASHEVILLE - Battalion Chief Jack Clark, a 25 year veteran of
Asheville Fire & Rescue, died Thursday in a traffic accident in
Winnemucca, Nevada. |

Chief Clark was traveling to Nevada on
vacation when the single car wreck occurred, taking his life. He is
survived by his wife and four sons.
Clark began his career
with Asheville Fire & Rescue in April 1981 as a firefighter and
worked his way diligently up the ranks; at the time of his death,
Clark managed one of the department's three operating shifts.
Fire Chief Greg Grayson states, "Chief Clark had a long and
distinguished career with Asheville Fire & Rescue and was a key
member of the organization. Our hearts go out to the Clark family
and friends. His friends with Asheville Fire & Rescue will miss him
greatly."

GASTON COUNTY -
A two
alarm fire broke out at Kitchen Creations, 154 Superior Stainless
Road. Gaston County Police responding to an alarm activation found
the fire. Fire crews arrived to find the building fully involved.
Explosions kept firefighters cautious during their attack.
One
explosion blew out a wall. It took about two hours for fire crews to
bring the fire under control. The fire remains under investigation.
Fire departments responding included Crowders Mountain, South
Gastonia, City of Gastonia, Union Road, Ranlo, Lowell and Clover,
South Carolina as well as others. No one was injured in the fire
that was fueled by wood, chemicals, paint and propane. Nearly
everything in the building was lost. The company builds custom
cabinetry, fireplace mantels and veneers.

RALEIGH - Fire department
photographer Lee Wilson choreographed the staging of Raleigh's
newest apparatus Wednesday afternoon. Four 2006 Pierce Enforcer
pumpers, future Engines 3, 8, 12, and 15, were photographed at the
Alltel Pavilion along with Truck 26, a 2006 Pierce Arrow XT aerial
ladder. The engines are expected in service this week.

RALEIGH - Spectators from the
State Capitol to the Moore Square parking deck watched in awe as
Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team members practiced rappelling
from the top of the First Union Building last Friday. Members
descended the north face of the 30-story building at the corner of
South Salisbury and West Hargett Streets.
The participating companies were Engine 7, Rescue 7, Engine 14 and
Truck 1. The Raleigh Fire Department is a member of North Carolina
USAR Task Force 8, a regional group comprised of personnel and
equipment from the fire departments of Raleigh, Durham, Cary and
Chapel Hill.
