Firefighter Succumbs to Injuries from MVC

GRANVILLE COUNTY - Antioch-Fishing Creek Volunteer Firefighter
Joseph Louis Bilka, 60, died on May 21. Firefighter Bilka was
responding to the fire station on April 22 at 01:30 for a
reported fire alarm. His vehicle struck a semi-truck. He was
hospitalized until his death. |

MOORESVILLE - The Mooresville Fire Department was dispatched for
a reported structure fire early on May 20. The lighting caused fire
destroyed the dwelling that was under construction.

MOUNT AIRY - On Thursday, May
25 at 1803, the Mount Airy Fire Department was dispatched to this
structure fire on Durham Street. Heavy smoke and fire were reported
on arrival. Engines 1, 2, 3, Truck 2, Unit 2 (Command), Surry EMS
and Mount Airy Rescue responded. Due to balloon frame construction,
the fire quickly spread throughout the attic. The fire was
controlled in 39 minutes and without injury.

HARNETT COUNTY - The Memorial
Day weekend traffic rush on Interstate 95 got off to a very slow
start after two charter buses collided near Dunn. Only one serious
injury was reported, but nearly 20 students were transported to area
hospitals for evaluation.

RALEIGH -
A severe thunderstorm felled
trees and power lines in northeast Raleigh early Thursday evening.
City and county fire units responded to multiple calls in the areas
of Fox Road, Louisburg Road, Capital Boulevard, and Interstate 540.
The most impacting incident involved live electrical wires across
the I-540 and Capital Boulevard exchange. Dozens of motorist were
delayed as fire and law enforcement units carefully diverted traffic
through the area.

NASH COUNTY - On Wednesday,
May 24, Red Oak Fire Department Truck 124 was traveling over
Interstate 95 and noticed a cloud of dust down in the median. They
notified communications and proceeded to the incident. On arrival,
Command was established and the size-up indicated an entrapment and
one pediatric fatality. Both directions were shut down, and the
extrication took approximately 45 minutes.
Red Oak was assisted by Coopers Fire-Rescue, Stoney Creek Rescue,
Nash EMS, Nash FMO, Eastcare, NCSO and NCSHP. A large wrecker was
special called to assist with the extrication.
