HIGH POINT
- Engines 1, 6 and 9, Ladder 2, Squad 2 and Battalion Chiefs 1 and
2 responded to 1420 East Commerce Street shortly after 0700 hours
last Wednesday. Smoke was visible several miles out. Battalion 2
arrived on scene and advised units would have a fully involved
apartment fire. He quickly called for a defensive attack. The fire
was contained to one apartment but heavy smoke damage was done to
the other units. No injuries were reported. The apartments were
vacant.

WINSTON-SALEM - The
Winston-Salem Fire Department responded to this house fire on
West Sprague Street on Saturday, February 10th. Engine 6 arrived
on scene and Captain Jerry Amos reported a 1 story single family
dwelling with heavy fire showing. All occupants were out of the
building. The fire was brought quickly under control using 2
handlines. The cause was determined to be accidental. There were
no injuries. The companies responding were Engines 6, 5, 4,
Truck 2, Rescue 1, Air Resource 1, Battalion Chiefs 2 and 1.

FIRE
SURRY COUNTY - On February 1st,
the Skull Camp Volunteer Fire Department responded to this MVC
with Rescue on NC 89 West. Units arrived to find a small car
that was struck head on by a tractor-trailer hauling 11,000
gallons of propane gas. There was a vehicle fire and small
propane leak on scene. There was one 2-1/2 inch line in place
with an ozzie monitor to dispurse vapors from the propane
leak. The vehicle fire was contained to the engine
compartment. The leak was quickly controlled and
shutoff valves were pulled.
There was one fatality on scene in the small car and the
driver of the truck was not injured. Firefighters had to deal
with snow covered roads while en route and on scene. Units
assigned from Skull Camp: E1, E2, T1, T2, Tk 1, Tk 6 and ATV
1. Tankers from mutual aid departments were also requested due
to the report that propane was involved and on fire.
Departments responding were Glalax, Franklin and Central
Surry, Surry County EMS, Surry Haz-Mat Team, Mt. Airy Rescue
Squad, SHP and DOT.

ASSISTANT
ASHEVILLE - The Western North
Carolina Fire and Life Safety Educators Association has named Terri
Byers, Fire Education Coordinator with the Hickory Fire Department,
“Educator of the Year”. She was presented the award during a banquet
at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville on Monday, February 5. Also
winning the award was Terry Malone with the Weaverville Fire
Department in Buncombe County. Byers and Malone were nominated for
their outstanding work in fire and life safety education and for
developing lesson plans for state certification in fire and life
safety.

WILSON COUNTY - At
approximately 0940 hours on February 9, companies were dispatched to
a house fire on Neal Road. All companies took in the call from Rock
Ridge VFD along with Contentnea, Sims, and Lucama stations filling
the box. All companies responding from “The Rock” had full crews.
Additional information on the call advised companies of fire and
smoke showing from the original caller.
Arriving shortly, Engine 61 advised a working fire with flames
showing from the “Charlie” side, all hands would be going to work.
Second due E63 brought water and 603 established Neal Road
Command. Crews stretched the leader line to the side door to find
fire in the kitchen and living room areas. All occupants were out
and searches were negative. E83 and Squad 85 provided RIT for the
job. Crews made quick work of the fire and started to open up for
complete extinguishment. A great job of salvage work was done and
the fire was cooking related. A family of 4 was displaced; but the
home is repairable due to the cooperation of all companies.
Responding companies: E61, E63, T62, S66, E1116, S1115, E1001,
E83, S85, Chief 60, 100 and 1100.
At 0252 a box was transmitted for a vehicle fire endangering a
commercial structure. While en route, companies were advised flames
were impinging on the building and the car was fully involved. E61,
E63, T62, S66, and Chief 60 responded. E61 arrived, reported a
working fire just a few feet from the structure. All hands made
quick work of the fire and marked it under control. E63 secured
water supply while Squad 66 and T62 sent crews to the roof of the
exposure to check for extension. Reports of extension were negative
and crews began to pick up. Responding companies: E61, E63, T62,
S66, Chief 60.
After returning to the house, at 0341 a box was transmitted for a
structure fire on the southwest end of the district. With crews
recognizing the address, we took the call in. Again E61, E63, S66,
Chief 60 responded with full crews. Upon arrival, Kenly Car 1
assumed command and reported a fully involved mobile home, all hands
went to work. E63 secured a water supply as Kenly crews made quick
work of the attack with the 2-˝ inch handline. E61 and S66 provided
the truck assignments and opened up for extinguishment to be
completed. The house was vacant at the time. Responding companies:
Kenly E1, E2, S1, Car1, 5, E61, E63, S66, Chief 60, E83, S85, Micro
units and EM1.
