Fire Destroys Former KKK Leader's Home
SAT FEB 02
SUBMITTED BY CARTER RABIL, CFP-7322
JOHNSTON COUNTY -
Authorities are
investigating the cause of a suspicious fire at the home of former
KKK leader Charles “Junior” Barefoot. Meadow and Benson
Fire responded to the fire Monday. Barefoot, the former leader of a
KKK splinter group, was found incompetent in December to stand
trial. Barefoot, 45, represented himself last month during a hearing
in Clinton.
He was ordered to remain in custody indefinitely. In 2003, Barefoot
was jailed for the murder of a Jacksonville man whose body was found
buried in a rural Sampson County field.
Barefoot is also accused of plotting to blow up the Johnston County
Courthouse including the sheriff’s office in 2002. That same year,
local and state and federal authorities seized more than a dozen
firearms, two homemade bombs, bomb-making equipment, and a
Klansman's robe. A burned cross was also found where Barefoot’s
group met.
Editor's Note: The firefighter's name on his turnout is correct:
MOONPIE is his nickname.
