Lt. Herman, assigned to Engine 10-C in the southeast portion of
the city, reportedly suffered severe chest pains Friday night
and was transported. He passed away last evening at Chapel Hill.
Arrangements have now been posted.

Man Severely Burned in House Explosion

DURHAM - An explosion Sunday morning
destroyed one home and damaged two others in the 1000 block of 9th
Street. Durham firefighters found 1020 fully involved on arrival.
Two other dwelling suffered fire damage. The lone occupant was
transported with severe burn injuries. According to investigators,
he was attempting to commit suicide.
Units responding: First Alarm - BC2, BC1, E2, E1, E5, L2, L1, SQ1,
MS1, FD5; Second Alarm - BC3, E3, E9, E6 and E10.

HOT SHOT
Smoke Detectors Saves Occupant from House Fire

GUILFORD COUNTY - At approximately 08:30 on
January 14th, the Alamance Community Fire Department was
dispatched to a reported house fire. Engine 44 reported heavy
smoke showing on arrival. Mutual aid was provided by Southeast and
Guilford County Squad 50.
Water was supplied by a tanker shuttle. Fortunately the home owner
escaped without injury thanks due to working smoke detectors.
Sadly, three cats did not survive the fire.

Vehicle and Outbuilding Fire

UNION COUNTY -
On January 14th at 13:07, Stallings responded
with Providence and Hemby Bridge to a reported outbuilding fire on
Matthews-Indian Trail. Responding units were advised of a vehicle
also being involved. Engine 20 arrived and advised they had a fully
involved vehicle and structure. Units controlled the fire in about
45 minutes.

Fire at Carolina Art and Frame

KERNERSVILLE - Kernersville Fire Rescue responded to Carolina Art &
Frame on January 7th around 07:28 hours. Engine 42 arrived to find a
working fire in a silo that contained a large amount of sawdust.
Crews attacked the fire, but after knockdown, had to shovel the
contents of the silo out to fully extinguish the fire.
Forsyth County EMS and Winston-Salem Rescue Squad established the
Rehab Group. Additional assistance was provided by Colfax, Piney
Grove, Beeson's Crossroads, High Point, Winston-Salem and Oak Ridge.
