Description:
The Fire Marshal is an FLSA-exempt employee who is responsible for the leadership and management of the Fire Prevention Division of the Durham Fire Department. This is accomplished by enforcing applicable laws and ordinances, investigating fires where arson is suspected or fatalities/severe inujuries occur, coordinating fire education programs, supervising and participating in residential and commercial inspection programs, authorizing permits in compliance with the Fire Prevention code, and operating within assigned budgetary parameters. Other duties include assisting other departments regarding fire inspection fees, licenses, fire code related issues, or as assigned by the Fire Chief or Deputy Fire Chief. Future responsibilities may include the leadership and management of any one of the Fire Department’s divisions, including the Operations Division, Planning and Administration Division or Safety/Training & Special Operations Division.
Requirements:
Work requires broad knowledge in general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Public Administration, Business Administration or equivalent.
At least ten years of progressively responsible experience in a municipal fire department of comparable size to the Durham Fire Department, with at least five years experience at the senior management level (Assistant Fire Marshal/Battalion Chief or higher).
North Carolina Driver’s license.
Standard Level III Fire Inspector Certificate issued by the N.C. Code Officials Qualification Board.
Certificate should exhibit strong inter-personal skills and have the demonstrated ability to be a progressive thinker.
A Fire Chief’s interview will be scheduled for each selected eligible candidate, followed by the Fire Chief’s appointment to the position. A job application must be submitted to Human Resources prior to the application deadline date.

Individuals selected for conditional offers of employment must pass the City of Durham physical examination including background drug and alcohol testing and a comprehensive check. The successful candidate is required to submit a criminal and DMV history for the last 5 years.
