Morehead City Structure Fire with Backdraft

Carteret County


MOREHEAD CITY – On December 2, 2011 Morehead City Fire and EMS received a call for a residential structure fire located at 3508 Mandy Lane.

Upon arrival of MCFD, QRV 2, a size up was given of a confirmed structure fire. Crews from MCFD, Atlantic Beach, and Wildwood Fire departments fought the fire for approximately 40 minutes.

During fire suppression activities, crews radioed that they were encountering high heat conditions on Division Two.

Shortly after this radio transmission, a backdraft occurred causing crews to be briefly over run by flames.

Crews on the exterior heard a loud boom and witnessed smoke push out of the Bravo and Delta sides.

The backdraft occurred 16 minutes after Engine 2 arrived on scene.

There were no injuries from this event. Crews were on scene approximately four hours investigating the cause of the fire.
