ASHEVILLE – The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to back the renaming of one of Asheville’s most-traveled landmarks after fallen firefighter Captain Jeff Bowen.
Council members and those attending the meeting gave a standing ovation to Bowen’s family who thanked the elected officials for their support in renaming Smoky Park Bridge.
“You bestow a great honor on him and we appreciate it,” said Bowen’s widow, Stacey.
Bowen died fighting a fire in an office building near Mission Hospital on July 28.
The state Board of Transportation has the final say on naming parts of the state road system.
