Fatal Truck Collision

Nash County


BATTLEBORO – Shortly after 14:30 hours on Friday, December 23, Nash County 911 began receiving calls for a serious collision on northbound US Highway 301 in the Battleboro section of the county.

Battleboro Fire, Nash County Station 9, along with Nash EMS was dispatched.

Nash EMS was first on scene and reported that they had a head-on collision between a pick-up truck and a tractor (no trailer). They reported one fatality and that the cab of the tractor was in a swamp and that the driver was trapped.

Battleboro Assistant Fire Chief Jim Hardee directed a 1.75-inch line with foam to be stretched, as the highway was covered with diesel fuel and gasoline from ruptured fuel tanks.

One EMS member had worked his way through the swamp onto the cab of the semi to assess the condition of the driver who was still trapped in the cab.

Battleboro firefighters used two ground ladders to access the semi cab.

Stony Creek Rescue Squad was special called to assist with the extrication of the driver from the pick-up.

The highway was closed for over three hours.

    Its good to see a progressive department use foam as a protective blanket protecting the vicitms and the emergency personell from possible igniton. Good work by the Battleboro FD and others on the scene!
