ROCKY MOUNT – On Monday November 14th, the City of Rocky Mount Fire Department responded to a single vehicle accident on U.S. Hwy 64 at the 472 on ramp.
The first engine arrived on scene within three minutes and reported one passenger was pinned with critical injuries.
An additional engine, two rescue squad trucks and a Battalion Chief responded from Rocky Mount Fire Department.
West Edgecombe Rescue Squad responded with an ALS ambulance and provided patient care while fire personnel initiated patient extrication.
A helicopter from East Care was requested to air lift the patient to Pitt Memorial Trauma Center in Greenville.
The impact caused significant damage to the vehicle resulting in extrication that involved removing the roof, driver side door, and rolling the dash off the patient’s legs.
The patient was packaged for transport to the landing site for the helicopter, which was approximately 1,000 feet away.
Paramedics from West Edgecombe Rescue Squad continued patient care until the patient was transferred to the ALS crew from East Care.
The coordinated effort between the three agencies resulted in the patient being extricated in 33 minutes and arriving at the helicopter within three minutes of being removed from the vehicle.
