Fire Severely Damages Banging Systems Car Audio

Cumberland County

FAYETTEVILLE – A smoldering fire burned through a Robeson Street car audio store on Monday night, causing extensive damage to the building and vehicles inside it, according to the Fayetteville Fire Department.

The fire at Banging Systems Car Audio at 840 Robeson St. was reported at 9:30 p.m. after a passer-by saw smoke coming from the auto bay, Battalion Commander Nixon Spell said.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the roof and the business’s bay doors, and crews called for a second alarm, he said.

The fire appeared to have started inside the business, which closed about 6:30 p.m., he said.

Several cars and the inside of the garage burned in the fire, Spell said. No injuries were reported in the fire.

A team of 28 firefighters using five engines and two ladder trucks cut holes in the roof to vent the fire and had it under control within about an hour, Spell said.

Crews continued venting the building and working on clearing out hotspots in the attic later in the night.

The Fayetteville Public Works Commission was a called in to cut power to the structure.

Investigation

Crews expected to remain on scene until the early morning hours as they began an investigation into the fire’s cause. Spell said firefighters had no reason to believe the blaze was suspicious.

The extent of damage wasn’t immediately known, but firefighters said the blaze would close the business for an indefinite time.

A man at the scene who identified himself as the business’s owner declined to comment.

The fire caused officials to close down Robeson Street in both directions at Gurley Street.
