JACKSONVILLE – Fire Marshal John Reed said the fire began in the attic above the sprinkler system and was called in at about 2 p.m. by Jones Onslow EMC employees who were working on an adjacent building and spotted the smoke.
The Jacksonville Fire Department called in back up from Camp Lejeune, Pumpkin Center and Half Moon volunteer fire departments.
The building was under construction and unoccupied at the time of the fire.
Reed said they were able to bring the fire under control by 2:45 p.m.
He said the cause of the fire has yet to be determined and it is under investigation.
Reed said about six units were damaged in the blaze.

Great to see mutual aid from our Federal firefighters helping out. I’m sure it was very appreciated.
We have an M.O.U. with them so we respond to them and they respond to us automatically. I will say that this however was a mutual aid response..
This was an interesting call with various departments for Mutual Aid. Hats off to the Volunteer Departments that were called upon to provide coverage for the city while this was happening.
It was nice to help our paid brothers and sisters in fighting the fire. Team work was the success of this story, it could have been worse!
